Herndon

Herndon is an incorporated town in Fairfax located just to the west of Reston and north of the Dulles Airport Toll Road.  Named for American Naval explorer William Herndon in 1858, the village attracted Northern veterans and their families after the Civil War.  The Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Railroad had a major stop in Herndon on the way to the rich farmland of Loudoun County.  The rail line is no longer there, but the right-of-way has been converted into a hike and bike trail that runs for 45 miles from Arlington to Purcellville.  The old rail station in Herndon is now a museum and tourist attraction.

Four Fairfax County Parks (Bready, Alabama Drive, Stanton and Folly Lick), a great public golf course and the Herndon Rec Center offer residents a wide variety of options for recreation.  From what was once farmland has sprung a community with great restaurants, shopping and commercial space, so folks in Herndon don’t have far to go for entertainment either.  While you won’t see any high-rises in Herndon, there are plenty of condos, townhomes and detached homes in every price range.

Planes, trains and automobiles.  A stone’s throw away from Dulles International Airport, Herndon also has direct access to Tyson’s Corner and Washington, DC heading east on the Dulles Toll Road and to Leesburg to the west on the Dulles Greenway.  And the trains are coming in the form of Metrorail, opening in mid-decade.  That will link Dulles Airport and multiple stops along the Dulles Access Road to the entire 100+ mile Metro system.
